PLANO, TEXAS -
Researchers say spanked kids become happy, successful adults.
Like most parents, reality star Kate Gosselin has her hands full. She made tabloid headlines when pictures surfaced of her allegedly spanking one of her kids.
Spanking goes back as far as parenting and a new study indicates that kids who were spanked up to the age of six we more likely as teens to do better at school, volunteer and go on to college than kids who were never spanked.
Twenty-two-year-old Justine Kilby says she was spanked as a child.
"I just graduated from college. I was always really involved in a lot of things that you talked about, volunteered a lot was in student government, athletics, all that stuff. I don't know, I turned out okay." Says Justine.
Dr. Thomas Van Hoose is a child psychologist at UT Southwestern. He says that while many believe spanking is unacceptable, it can be useful.
"If you're trying to impress on a child what not to do because it's really serious or could hurt them, then spanking is an appropriate negative consequence for that." Says Dr. Van Hoose.
Researchers studied 2,600 hundred people, about 25 percent had never been spanked. The study also found children who were spanked into their teens were more likely to develop behavioral problems. Dr. Van Hoose says he can confirm that in his clinic.
"The children who are spanked over and over and over again and especially if parents lose control of their emotions while they are doing it, sends it the other way and they become resentful, angry and other things." Says Dr. Van Hoose.
Angela Walker says she's not surprised by the study. She says her daughter Gabrielle is the perfect bundle of joy. So far.
"I have no intention of spanking Gabrielle, if at all I can help it." Says Angela.
Even though she says her parents spanked her.
"I was spanked when I was little and it hasn't done me any harm, although I didn't like it much" Says Angela.
Dr. Van Hoose says parents should reserve spanking to only serious offenses and never spank when they're upset because that may lead to spanking too hard.
