A booty call has many definitions, but is commonly accepted as the act of contacting someone for the purpose of having sex. The not particularly-respected occurrence is the subject of new research which finds it is a "hybrid". It's marked by not as much emotion as long term relationships but more sexual variety than one night stands.
Plano sex therapist Pamela Smale Williams likes that a topic like the booty call or casual sex is being researched. She says, "A lot of people want labels. A lot of people want to know what they're in." But Smale Williams didn't like that it used just 300 college students as its sample and that its results were based on an online survey of the sexual acts the participants said they participated in. Pamela Smale Williams says, "They are limiting themselves too much in their research."
But Smale Williams says a positive point is that people can forward now. With a booty call definition, talk of rules, etiquette and expectations can follow. One of the biggest unmet expectations is when one person begins more emotionally tied than another. SMU graduate Lauren Zbylski says, "One of my best friends had an experience like that and it started off as a mutual understanding and then she became a lot more invested than he did and it just didn't end well. It really hurt her and they couldn't be friends and it got kind of ugly."
Health professionals say ideally couples should set the rules before getting physical, but realize if the relationship were heavy on communication, then it probably wouldn't be a booty call.
