DALLAS - A North Texas couple is grieving the loss of their toddler after police say he was accidentally run over by the family's SUV.

It happened Sunday afternoon on Marsalis Avenue in Oak Cliff.

In the blink of an eye, the Corona family lost their youngest member, 17-month-old Fernando.

"I just started shaking real bad thinking oh my God," said Wanda Chagolla, a neighbor.

Witnesses, like Chagolla, rushed to help the little boy and his frantic mother, but there wasn't much they could do.

"I'm saying what's wrong, what's wrong? And she looks at me and her legs go weak. She says Fernando is dead," Chagolla said.

Police got the call about 3 p.m. They say the toddler's teenage sister was heading out to get food. She backed up her Tahoe, without knowing her brother was nearby.

"It appears right now it's just a very, very sad accident. The child followed big sister out to the car, sister never knew," said Dallas Police Officer James Bristo.

"Apparently one of his sisters did see him run out, but she was trying to catch him and it was too late," Chagolla said.

The boy was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital. Police say at this point, they're not placing blame.

"Right now we're not anticipating any charges being filed or anything like that, it's just a very, very tragic accident," said Bristo.

Chagolla hopes this heartbreaking story serves as a lesson for others.

"Look both ways, always. Be sure there's no children in the parking lots," she said.
