David Kunkle has been the Chief of the Dallas Police Department since June 2004.

Sources in the Dallas Police Department and Dallas City Hall confirm to The 33 News that David Kunkle is expected to announce his retirement Thursday.

"I am proud to serve as the Chief of Police for Dallas, and honored to work with such a strong, diverse group of men and women. I believe that the Dallas Police Department is the best and most professional organization in the country," states David Kunkle in "a Message From the Chief" on the Dallas Police Department's Web site.

David Kunkle recently became the center of a controversial story that reached national headlines. Local news stations revealed his officers fined 48-year-old Ernestia Valdez Mondragon for not speaking English on October second. Days later, it was revealed Dallas police officers had fined 38 drivers for having an inadequate command of the English language.

David Kunkle became the youngest captain in the history of the Dallas Police Department, according to UTA's Web site.

The Chief of the Dallas Police Department is appointed by the city manager who, in turn, is hired by the Dallas City Council.

Kunkle became Police Chief in Grand Prairie in 1982. He had the same position in Arlington starting in 1985.

The news comes a few days after Carrollton Police Chief David James announced his retirement last week, which will be effective January 15, 2010.
