DALLAS - How many times have you gotten an invitation to an event, but you have no idea what to wear and you're terrified of under dressing or over dressing? The Shak at Stanley Korshak put on a fashion show to help you decide dress code etiquette.

Bret McKinney, from The Shak, says, "You get these casual chic, or dressy casual, there's all these different terms that are used."

But the old rules of fashion don't apply to the next generation of hipsters. Molly Terry a shopper says, "Ever since Sharon Stone wore that gap turtleneck at the red carpet, it's like you can kind of do anything if you really want to."

For a week night event, you're safe going understated. Take off your flats, darken your lipstick, and you're set. Bret says, "You just change shoes and take off that cardigan and you're ready to go just about anywhere." Brittain Watson, a shopper, says, "You add more makeup, that's what I was going to say, add more makeup, and a higher heel, exactly."

Denim is the hot ticket this season, but for a dressier party, ditch the distressed jeans and go for a darker, skinny cut with embellished ankles for a sleek, long look. Bret says, "This new generation of 20s to mid 30 something girls, these are girls that love to wear jeans and are wearing 3 and 400 jeans so if you're going to spend that much on jeans, these girls are making them cocktail appropriate."

And Brittain Watson says, "The denim is everything, because really if it's something like a cocktail, you can still get away with a great jean and cool, funky, sexy silky top." And the blazer is key to looking cool at any event. Harriet Gibbe says, "If you guys don't get anything else in your wardrobe, get a really cool fitted jacket."

Even cocktail attire doesn't mean knee length anymore. With thigh grazing mini dresses, the more leg, the better and flashy sequence makes it festive. But the most important thing you take with you to an event, confidence. Showing up feeling fabulou will make everyone take notice at any party.
