There is a porch light on and cars in the driveway. But the Hayes family of Frisco isn't home and isn't coming home. Neighbor Anna Eadie says, "It's a sad day in the community. It really is."
35 year old Shelby Hayes died this morning. She was a victim of this horrific chain-reaction crash Friday on Interstate 44 in far northeast Oklahoma. It also killed her 38 year old husband Randal Scott Hayes, 55 year old mother Cynthia Olson and 7 year old son Ethan. They were reportedly travelling for a funeral when a tractor-trailer slammed into cars that had stopped for a previous accident. Neighbor Robin Bellemore says, "They were just really sweet people. Adored Ethan. You never saw one of them without Ethan being around, so he's the center of their life, obviously."
And Bellemore says, he was the center of their neighborhood. She calls Ethan a lively, adorable child who talked non-stop from about the moment he learned how. Robin Bellemore says, "I can still see him walking to kindergarten, which is probably two years ago. He's got his backpack and I said, 'Ethan are you starting kindergarten?' 'Yes, I'm going to kindergarten (blah, blah, blah).' I can't remember what he said, all the way down I'm getting in my car to go to work and I have to stand out here politely and he's walking all the way down, as far as I can see him he's telling me, his first day of school, so precious."
Shelby was reportedly a stay at home mom and Scott worked at a SuperTarget on Eldorado Parkway. Co-workers say he was extremely popular and will be missed. One told me he was the go-to guy who could fix anything and was happy to do it, whether it was his job or not.
