The Dallas Comic Con brought thousands of science fiction and comic book fans together.

Plano Resident Glenn Pipe had a special guest with him on Saturday -- a robot he built, modeled after Star Wars' R2-D2.

"Pretty overwhelming responses," Pipe said. "I like bringing R-2 to places like this where people enjoy him, seeing him and taking pictures and what not. Bringing smiles to everybody's facesÂ…it makes me happy."

The 17th annual event moved to the Irving Convention Center this year -- a venue ten times larger to accomodate growing crowds.

"I think this is my fifth or sixth time," said London Gillean. "It`s gotten a lot bigger since the first time I showed up.'

Many fans opted to dress as their favorite comic character.

Mallory Nelson said, "I`m basically here to see the costumes, they`re just awesome. I am BabyDoll from the movie Suckerpunch."

Star Trek Fan Darcy Johnson dressed up as Spock.

"A friend of mine gave the Spock ears to me for Christmas last year because they knew I liked vulcons," Johnson said. "I was originally going to get them signed, but I decided that was not such a great idea.'

One of the biggest draws this year was a chance to meet the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy.

"I had been acting in films in television for many years," Nimoy said, "but never in a character that had this kind of impact on an audience."

His cult followers paid $75 just to hear the science fiction legend speak.

But, of course, the biggest attraction at Comic Con are the comic books.

"It's really fun, because everybody's connecting over one thing, and it's comic books," Gillean said. "The atmosphere is just awesome. You become a family, even though you don't know anyone else here."
