The conversation coming from behind a closed door at We Only Wax in Dallas is comfortable and easy. Surprising maybe, because the procedure at hand involves heated wax and a guy's most intimate private parts. Owner Chandler Murphy says, "The girls they go through it. They're realizing the benefits of it...and they want their men the same way."
Men make up 60% of the clientele at the busy boutique. Other North Texas salons tell me the same thing: the male Brazilian wax or so-called Brozilian wax is now all the rage. One male client says mid-wax, about men, "They're no longer just removing the hair on their back. They finally realize they can get the hair off a lot of places."
Guys of different ages and for different reasons are going hair-free down south. Chandler Murphy says, "Not only aesthetically does it look good, you don't have to worry about trapping odor, perspiration, bacteria."
And while one man we talked to gets waxed all over for reasons related to athletics, he will admit, albeit anonymously, there are sexual benefits to being smooth. He says, "That's what it is. It's the goose bumps. You have more heightened awareness. Everything is more sensitive. There's no interference."
Women could be contributing to this metro sexual trend. We go to great lengths to look good and feel good about ourselves. Bikinis waxes, even brazilian waxes are common. Maybe that's the new norm we now expect from men." At Beauty First Salon in Dallas, men are a common sight. Employee Megan Rathmel says, "When men see women take care of themselves, they want men to take care of themselves as well."
The owner of We Only Wax says for many of the male first-timers, it may be the girls or wives who call in for them initially, but it's the guys who come back or a little lower...all on their own.
