McKINNEY, TEXAS -
Another north Texas sunset, a time when many families gather around the dinner table or grab some fast-food on the way home. But not Pastor Summit Church Pastor Joel Miller who is eleven days into a hunger strike. Joel says the smell from nearby restaurants makes him even hungrier.
"I will tell you, I can smell bacon from four miles away." Says Pastor Miller.
Pastor Miller is trying to raise 30 thousand non-perishable food items before Thanksgiving. He says he won't stop until he reaches his goal.
"For me as an adult, I can choose not to eat. But for children, they don't understand, they wonder, why won't you give me food? Says Pastor Miller.
And the need for food is growing, the North Texas Food Bank is teaming up with St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano to help serve the needy in Collin county. Sharon Hasley says the food bank is only open on Thursdays for three hours. Still, more than 275 people are served.
"We think there is about 40 thousand people who are food insecure. They don't have enough food to last the month." Says Sharon.
Pastor Miller sleeps in tent on top of an 18 wheeler. He spends the day calling people for donations. Tom Fish donated and he says it felt good.
"I think it feeds us more than it does them. It makes you feel good to help someone." Says Tom.
As for Pastor Miller, he plans on having 45 people over to his house for Thanksgiving dinner. He says he hopes he can attend.
"Here is the thing, if I don't reach my goal by then, I'm going to be right up here."
As of Wednesday night, Pastor Miller says 6 thousand food items had been donated. His hunger strike is now in it's 11th day. He's lost 14 pounds.
