Nearly a week after a transformer blew, residents at the Jane Lane apartments are still in the dark and in the heat. Many, including 20 year old Colton White, are staying outdoors to keep cool.
He says, " The electricity has been off since last Saturday."
White lives here with his pregnant girlfriend and says the heat is unbearable. They'd like to go to a hotel, but can't afford it. He says, " We're trying to save so we can get some more food."
Everything in their refrigerator had to be tossed.
Food and heat are the two major complaints for most of the eighty people left without power. Resident Richard Alvair says " Oh, I don't even know. I haven't been in the apartment man, probably over one hundred degrees or so."
So Wednesday afternoon Haltom City emergency managers asked the American Red Cross to step in. Emily Getzschman says, " Its unbelievably hot out there so we need to have alternatives for the people that live there to have a place to cool down."
The Christian Center of Fort Worth is now prepared to house residents.
While the Red Cross is currently offering a place for residents to go the majority that we spoke with say they'll be toughing it out. Some didn't want to leave their belongings behind and decided to use vacant apartments being offered by complex managers who say they're doing all they can.
