Jenny Block is a wife, mother and according to her, as boring as they come.
She says, "A typical Saturday night in this household is Scrabble and takeout Chinese."
That might surprise you because in addition to her husband, the Dallas author and writer has a girlfriend. The open marriage is just fine with all three. Jenny Block says, "For me and I would not ever, ever say this for everyone, for me there is not one person. There is not one, happily ever after, Cinderella, 'You complete me' character."
Comedian and new Academy Award winner Mo'Nique is putting the controversial subject center stage. In last night's Barbara Walters Oscars Special, Mo'Nique says she is in an open marriage, something she called having "no secrets". Mo'Nique says, "Could I have sex outside of my marriage with Sidney? Yes. Could Sidney have sex outside of our marriage with me? Yes. That's not a deal breaker."
But it is dangerous, according to some. Dr. Ross Stewart, a Dallas marriage and family therapist says every open marriage couple he has counseled is now divorced. Dr. Stewart says the challenges range from time scheduling to self-confidence to social acceptance. Dr. Ross Stewart says, "The vast majority of our culture does not approve of open marriages. They do not approve of swinging. They expect you to stay faithful to your spouse, so you have to keep secrets."
Jenny Block says for her it's been liberating. Her 2008 book on open marriage is called Open: Love, Sex and Life in an Open Marriage. It still floods her with fan mail and with what she calls "not so nice" mail that she's learned to take in stride. Jenny Block says, "It has been my experience that people who have problems with other people's relationships are really just deflecting problems with their own. Why would it make any difference how many partners I have?"
A small percentage of the population claims to have open marriages. Statistics put it anywhere from 1%-6%. If you would like to know more, log onto www.jennyonthepage.com
