Sports agent Albert Elias isn't a professional athlete, but he represents 20 NFL players and coaches. For the past month he's tested the Under Armour performance mouthpiece and truth be told, he said he's looking for an edge himself.
"I work 24-7 you know, I'm always tired and in our industry, it's very competitive so the better you look the more energy you have the more success you are going to have," Said Elias.
The Vikings Adrian Peterson wears one and so does Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. According to Under Armour, the mouthpiece repositions the jaw to stop the athlete from clenching allowing the brain and muscles to function better. The mouthpieces are fitted at the dentist office. Researchers at Rutgers University studied performance mouthpieces and found that athletes did perform better.
Dr. John Hucklebridge says that clenching teeth releases a fatigue inducing hormone called cortisol. Whatever the reason, DR. Hucklebridge said patients say it works.
"They don't know if it's the placebo effect or they don't know if it's the appliance, but they feel improvement over strength, over hitting a golf ball, but the verdict is still out on it," Said Dr. Hucklebridge.
Albert can't wait to play golf with his mouthpiece, but he has worked out and said there is a different.
"I work out with a trainer and it was really funny, I've been all over the world the last two or three weeks recruiting for college guys so I haven't worked out as much and my trainer made a comment the other day that I was stronger," Said Elias.
And if you're looking to improve performance, he said stronger is better.
"I'm not as tired, I'm stronger. I can endure the workout more you know, it's worth it," Said Elias.
Dr. Huckelbridge says the Under Armour mouthpiece costs about $500.00.
