DALLAS—
Dallas Independent School District Trustee Ron Price stands alone in his desire to rename two DISD schools. The suggestions are President Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Fellow board members say it is just too soon."This is not about being a Democrat or a Republican," says Price "It's about a very historical moment for a group of people in the United States who once thought this could never happen."
DISD board members discussed the item during a meeting Thursday.
A majority of the board feels this step would violate policy.
The schools in question are in South Dallas. O.M. Roberts Elementary and Billy Earl Dade Middle School are both in District 9, Trustee Price's district. Both schools are named after men with strong North Texas ties.
"Billy Earl Dade lived in that community and he had quite a bit of influence in that community." Civic activist Harry Robinson Jr. was on the committee to name Billy Earl Dade School.
"We were just appalled when we discovered a new school a replacement school would not have Dade's name."
Trustee Edwin Flores says naming a school after someone from Texas would be a better choice. "I'm sure there are many well qualified individuals with the age requirement that live in Dallas are from Dallas."
A vote on the name change is scheduled to take place during DISD's August 27th meeting.
