"B is for what? Breathing." Speed asks the class.
These kids, including eleven year old Olivia Slicker are learning that baby sitting is much more than watching television for three hours.
"Well, whenever you accept a babysitting job." Says Olivia. "You take the responsibility for a child's life."
And kids are often accidents waiting to happen. 14% of fall injuries happen on playground equipment. 13% happen on furniture at home while 80% of all fall injuries happen at home.
"And then you might find the lips turning blue, the nail beds turning blue." Speed warns the class which also learns CPR to save kids who stop breathing and the Heimlich hug to save a child from choking. Eleven year old Dawson Aronhalt is getting more than he bargained for.
"Well, I think it's a little more serious than I thought because I didn't know we would have to learn how to do CPR and stuff."
Carol Speed says learning CPR and stuff is vitally important.
"Well, I will tell you we have had four graduates from this class, that I am aware of, who have saved a child's life after taking this class."
Denise Kenney's daughter Blair is taking the class where kids also learn when to call 911 and to watch for anything dangerous.
"You feel more comfortable as the parent of the baby sitter and the parent of the baby that is being sat by them." Says Kenney. "It's just a great deal of responsibility."
She took the words right out of Olivia's mouth.
"Yea, it's a lot of responsibility."
