DALLAS, TX -
A new trail in The Colony gives residents a reason a to get out and enjoy the sun.
At Lewisville Lake, typical summer days usually involve boaters enjoying the sun or fisherman trying to get that perfect catch.
Walkers, joggers, and bikers near The Colony now have a reason to get out doors with the new shoreline trail.
"I think it's brought a lot of people out that would not normally be out being active." said Colony resident Penny Ranft.
Jogger Rob Stoermer agrees and says it's nice having a trail that's safer when he goes out for his morning run.
"Jogging across the intersection is kinda rough. We get a lot of traffic especially out on Main Street," Stoermer said.
The eight mile trail stretches from Stewart Creek Park to Ridgepoint Park on the other side.
What makes this trail significant is that it's abundant with wildlife management areas that wind throughout the trail. This means the trail has also attracted many nature enthusiasts.
The Colony also set up trail ambassadors who make sure everything on the trail is running smoothly.
Donna Cole is an avid bird watcher and decided to volunteer to educate trail goers on different species.
"It's a lot for my own personal enjoyment, and then again every time I can take a moment to teach someone about something, I always to do that," Cole said.
Trail volunteers also look out for those who might be affected by hot summer temperatures.
Trail guest Ana Bachmann says she'll bare the heat, just to get out and enjoy the view.
"It's a beautiful lake, it's nice to be able to walk around it and enjoy the scenery," Bachmann said.
The Colony Park Development Manager, Keith Helms says eventually they want this trail for more than just a recreation spot, but to also link up to other local facilities in the area.
"Being able to connect to schools and other parks and rec facilities, as well as commercial and retail destinations," Helms said.
For now, joggers and bikers can simply enjoy a nature filled trail by the lake that isn't seen to often in a city of six million.
