I asked Hal Pruessner, "Where did you even come up with the idea of Tree Yoga?" And he said, "I used to climb trees a lot when I was a kid and so I climbed up in a tree and started doing yoga." Then Hal invented this yoga sling to help him get up in the trees and stay there. He says, "It has neopreen rubber in it, just like wetsuits are made of, feel it see how it's kind of soft, squishy." I asked him, "What does it add to the practice of yoga?" And he said, "It's just an unbelievable experience, it gives you a sense of euphoria being in nature."
Now he uses it to teach classes, and along with some adventurous Lu Lu Lemon Athletica girls, I gave it a try. Shane Wallace, who tried it out says, "I got up in a sling and got upside down and it was amazing 06:32:00 it's very freeing and relaxing." And Alisha Hoack says, "It's definitely a lot more liberating practicing in a tree as you don't have just one way of movement that you typically get in a studio."
Alright, this the ultimate tree hugging experience and while it looks serene and peaceful, because you are hanging from a tree, it's actually a lot of work, because you have to engage every muscle in your body. Shane Hoack says, "There's a lot more upper body work than people think is required because you have to lift yourself into the sling and the core work's amazing." And Alisha Hoack says, "I know yoga is all about the core, but you definitely have to engage it using tree yoga, fore sure."
And just like yoga, it's about taking your practice to your own comfort level, from basic to advanced. But without structure of a classroom environment, you're free to let loose, and just hang out.
