The Killian family of Trophy Club is distraught. Jennifer Killian says, "It was heartless. It was completely heartless." Last night, a city police officer shot and killed Kingston, their one year old English Mastiff. Killian says, "He was a puppy. How do we tell our kids?"

It happened about 5:30 on Oak Hill Drive. Police Chief Scott Kniffen says the officer was responding to a neighbor's call of dogs running loose and after he arrived. He says, "The dogs came to the property line, one of them came into the street, and the officer was able to retreat behind his car."

Chief Kniffen says the dogs then went further back up into their yard and as the officer left the area around his patrol car to see if the dogs has gone into the back yard so he could secure them, "They came again to the property line and stopped, he yelled at them one of them came into the street a second time and the officer fired two shots killing the dog."

The Killians admit the dogs have gotten out before, but say officers have returned them. Larry Killian says, "Last night when I asked them what he did to deserve to get shot, he said he didn't bite him, he said he didn't attack him. He barked. He barked."

Chief Kniffen says the officer feared for his safety. He says, "I think the officer did what he had to do."
