Dallas - A new law will make the tint on some Texas drivers widows illegal. Its aimed at ridding the roadways of faceless cars and trucks.

Drivers who can't be seen through the front widows of their vehicles will likely fail the state inspection, or worse: get a costly fine.

"There will be a lot of people who need to get lighter tint," said Robiel Smith, owner of Dallas Auto Detail on Industrial Boulevard in Dallas.

The new law ,which goes into effect in September, says front window tint can be no lower then 35. "The lower the number the darker the tint," explains Smith.

Most drivers have no idea if their tint is acceptable. "I assume mine is legal, I hope it is," said driver Cole Donaldson. The only real way to know if your legal is to ask a state inspection station or most widow shops can tell you. They use a small digital device that can measure the light though your widow. Under the new law if the measurement reads 35, its legal.

The new law doesn't apply to the back windows and Smith says don't be fooled by the color of a tint. "Some folks think darker tint is better at rejecting the sun." Smith says that's not always true. Thicker film cost more but can do a better job of keeping your car cool, and keeping it within the law.
