Owners made the unprecedented decision at the request of both customers and employees. Server Sarah Chandler was one of the first to volunteer to work. She, and others, jumped at the chance to make some extra cash in this economy. Sarah Chandler says, "I try to make at least a hundred dollars a shift, and some days, like during the week we might walk out with $30, so you really need to work. I need to work."
The open-door move didn't surprise regulars Nancy and David Rockwell. They say being accommodated is part of the regular service at the restaurant. Customer David Rockwell says, "It's fantastic. It just says they're concerned about their people." Nancy adds, "It's definitely a smart business move because they're catering to their clientele. We could have gone elsewhere."
Restaurant management says it wasn't quite as busy as they hoped today, but it was enough to do some good. In addition to helping their customers and employees today, The Original Pancake House is also raising money for the Salvation Army of Dallas. It is donating one dollar from every person's total and more. General Manager Larry Laabs says, "Myself and a couple of employees are donating our day's salary towards it."
More than one customer appreciated the option of eating out this morning, saying it's one meal home-chefs didn't have to think about today. Customer Dewayne Williams says, "I think it's neat because they did go out of their way to meet some requests. A lot of people are at home cooking right now they're cooking the turkey and dressing and sides and everything."
