Plans to widen Interstate 35 in Denton County will have to wait. The Texas Transportation Commission unanimously approved $2 billion in highway projects but the I-35 project in Dallas, Denton and Tarrant Counties was not among them.
The money was approved by lawmakers after voters agreed to Proposition 12, a bond referendum voted on in 2007. The money could go toward any project as long as it did not include toll roads. Txdot said it plans to widen I-35E in Dallas and Denton Counties from 4 to 8 lanes on each side. The plans also include two managed or toll lanes down the center.
Because the plan included toll lanes the Commission decided it had no other choice. Denton County Judge Mary Horn said "a managed lane also includes free lanes." Horn said she talked with the Commission Chairman last week and she knew the I-35 project would be getting past over. She still hopes the State will find a way to fund the project which would help relieve congestion and grid lock traveling into Denton. Txdot said the Commission will return in 8 weeks with alternate plans to widen I-35.
